Llanelli comes together for the Jo Cox Great Get Together

IT’S the third year that the Great Get Together weekend will take place on 21st – 23rd June 2019, which would have been the 45th birthday of Jo Cox.

The Great Get Together is inspired by the former MP who was killed on 16 June 2016.

Jo’s family and friends came up with the initiative and more than one hundred organisations are now supporting the event.

Jonathan Harty the campaign manager was in Llanelli to see how the town came together and he wasn't disappointed. Food stalls, community organisations, musicians, face painters and magicians provided the entertainment while just about everyone turned up to enjoy the event.

The Mayor of Llanelli John Jones was there along with Nia Griffith MP and Lee Waters AM.

Nia Griffith said that the event was an important one in that it brought people together and that the event was particularly pertinent to her as she had been a colleague of Jo Cox. Lee Waters AM praised the work of community organisations and the police in taking part in the event and they way that they are proactively engaging with the community of Llanelli.

Mandy Jenkins from Ymlaen Llanelli said: "It has been great. A lot of people turned up and understood what it was all about. It is coincidental because I used to work with Jo Cox so it is kind of personal for me."

Jonathan Harty campaign manager for the Jo Cox Foundations said: "It is very much within the values Jo lived by. We decided the theme would be to get back together given the divisions in the community we have seen. Our guiding principle is 'we have more in common'. There are thousands of events across the country with hundreds taking place in Wales.
