Alfie Downs wins Newport Children’s library card competition

NEWPORT Libraries announce that the winner of the design of a library card competition is Alfie Downs aged 8.  His entry was chosen because of its strong design conveying a love of reading along with an iconic symbol of Newport.

The competition launched in early 2020 but, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the announcement of the winning design had to be delayed.

There was such a high standard that judging was very nearly impossible, on the judging panel Councillor Debbie Harvey, cabinet member for culture and leisure said:

“I have in fairness agonised over these as they are all worthy winners! Ultimately by a freckle Alfie’s was chosen as the winner.”

The entries were of such a high standard it was decided to present a prize to all those shortlisted, Caitlin Taylor, Jack Bland, Alice Bidhendy, Nandinee Singh and Thea Cottingham – with a special prize awarded to Alfie the winner.  His design will be put on all new children’s library cards.
