AM backs campaign for more mental health support for new parents

NEIL Hamilton, AM for Mid & West Wales and UKIP Leader in Wales, is backing a campaign for more mental health support for new parents.
Mr Hamilton is supporting the NSPCC’s Fight for a Fair Start Campaign to ensure help is available when needed so that all babies have the best start to life.
He said: “A staggering one in five mothers and one in 10 fathers experience mental health problems during pregnancy and after birth but don’t always get the right support.

“It is a crucial time for families and so I welcome this campaign to highlight this problem. I am pleased to support World Mental Health Day which will, I hope, highlight the need and encourage others to join the fight to make sure new parents get the help they need.”

In Wales the NSPCC is calling for dedicated perinatal mental health midwives and health visitors to help identify and support women and their families affected by poor maternal mental health in each health board area.

They also want all women and their families to be able to access a mother and baby unit that meet national standards, when needed.

Additional funding is also being sought to eliminate the disparity in access to specialist perinatal mental health services for women and their families across Wales, and to ensure services meet national quality standards.
