NEWPORT City Council’s Cabinet has approved an ambitious five-year climate change action plan.

The plan sets out how we will work towards becoming a carbon neutral organisation by 2030.

It also sets out how we will use our services to support climate change action across the city.

The plan has been finalised following consultation with residents and stakeholders last year, which showed broad support for the plan, themes, visions, and priorities.

The plan is centred around six key delivery themes:

organisational leadership and culture; our buildings; our land; transport and mobility; the goods and services we procure, and our wider role.

Under each theme are the actions we will take to reduce our carbon footprint.

Councillor Jane Mudd, leader of the council, said:

“I’m delighted to be able to present our ambitious climate change plan to our residents.

“This plan sets out the actions we will take as an organisation to reduce our carbon emissions over the next five years as we work towards reaching net zero emissions by 2030.

“Climate change is one of the defining global challenges of our generation. There is an urgent need for us all to come together to limit global temperature rises and build a sustainable world for future generations.

“We take our role in tackling climate change seriously, and as such this plan is a vital document in our journey towards net zero emissions.”

Councillor Jason Hughes, cabinet member for sustainable development, added:

“This plan is about us recognising that making the right choices now will set us on the right path for future generations.

“The actions we take today will shape how our city looks ten, twenty and thirty years from now. It is vital that we act now to protect our city and our planet for future generations.”
