Appointments system for browsing Cardiff libraries ends

PEOPLE in Cardiff no longer need to book appointments to go to libraries in hubs starting this week.

Social distancing is still in place inside libraries and visitors must wear a mask unless exempt.

Library staff will monitor the number of people inside libraries and some visitors might need to wait outside before they can enter.

Money advice drop-in sessions have also returned. Cardiff council’s money advice team offer support with budgeting, claiming benefits, debt, fuel poverty and more.

Councillor Lynda Thorne, cabinet member for housing and communities, said: “I’m really pleased that from Monday customers can once again just drop into their local library or hub to pick up a book or use computers without having to book an appointment.”

Libraries re-opened for browsing in April this year, but visitors had to book a slot before turning up, and each slot was limited to 25 minutes. However, members have been able to borrow books by ordering them online or over the phone since June last year.

Cllr Thorne added: “Some measures will still be in place inside the buildings as we make sure customers and staff remain safe from the risks of Covid-19 and we are grateful for everyone’s patience in observing these arrangements.

“I particularly welcome the return of our money advice drop-in sessions — many residents need our support more than ever as they struggle with money worries, problems paying the rent, bills and so on.

“I encourage anyone in that position to call into Central Library Hub, where our expert money advisers are available six days a week to help, or find out when the team will be visiting their local hub or library for their weekly outreach sessions.

“If you are struggling, please do this sooner rather than later so we can start supporting you immediately.”
