Barry town centre set for major regeneration project

A major regeneration project set for Barry town centre will see affordable apartments built and a new building for a health clinic.

The western end of the town centre, by Gladstone Bridge and Broad Street, would see new flats built on currently vacant land.

Broad Street Clinic would also be knocked down and rebuilt with a larger replacement building.

The £13.4 million regeneration project is set to be approved on Monday, June 7 by the cabinet of Vale of Glamorgan council.

Details of the project were revealed in a cabinet report, which stated: “The aims of the project are to deliver a range of new affordable homes, and if required private market homes, integrated with health facilities and commercial uses.

“[It would] safeguard and create new jobs, bringing back into economic use several undeveloped and underutilised sites at the western end of Barry town centre.

“This would help boost the town centre, improving it as a sustainable place for living, working and shopping.”

The project would also need planning approval from the council, and some funding from the Welsh Government, before it could proceed. No designs have yet been made public.

Plans are split into two sites: the vacant plot to the northwest of Gladstone Bridge, and the Broad Street Clinic site. Some of the flats would be built as older people’s homes.

The health clinic would be moved from its current location to the vacant plot by Gladstone Bridge.

The council will likely ask the Welsh Government to fund a grant of £3,150,000 towards the project, while the council’s housing department would fund the rest.
