Beauty salon Kingsway Shopping Centre Newport handed improvement notice for several breaches of coronavirus regulations on same day

A BEAUTY salon in Kingsway Shopping Centre, Newport, could be closed down after it was found breaching coronavirus regulations multiple times on the same day.

Glamour Forever closed its doors voluntarily at least twice yesterday, April 26, after a Newport City Council enforcement officer found several breaches of coronavirus rules.

According to the improvement notice, the salon was first visited yesterday at around 11.30 am. Upon arrival, the enforcement officer found that there was no signage telling customers to wear a mask and no maximum number of people allowed in the store signage at the entrance.

Sanitiser was also not available to customers at the entrance and a staff member was found “about to provide eyebrow threading treatment to a customer wearing only disposable gloves and a mask face covering”.

The notice says the staff member was “not aware of or trained in the disposal of personal protective equipment (PPE).”

After the breaches were discovered, the shop was closed voluntarily until they were addressed.

The improvement notice says the salon was reopened again at 1.40 pm on the same day.

At this time, it was discovered that the issues had not been addressed and a staff member was found “about to provide eyebrow threading treatment to a customer who had ‘walked in’ wearing only disposable gloves and a mask face covering”.

The notice says the “customer who had ‘walked in’ stated she did not have an appointment but (was) shown to a chair”.

It says no NHS Test, Trace Protect details were taken from the customer and the “lone member of staff in salon stated she did not know what NHS Test Track Protect records were or that they had to be obtained from all persons attending the salon”.

The staff member about to provide the eyebrow threading had also still not been trained in the disposal of PPE, according to the enforcement officer.

It was at this point the shop was closed for a second time but was reopened at approximately 2.15 pm the same day.

According to the notice, the breaches around signage at the entrance for mask wearing and the maximum number of people allowed inside still hadn’t been fixed. There was still no sanitiser available to customers at the entrance.

Although the staff member said there were “no appointments this afternoon” a customer walked in and was given an appointment for the next day, but the customer “was not offered sanitiser”.

The notice says the “lone staff member stated she had still not received PPE disposal training”.

The beauty salon has been given 48 hours to make the necessary changes, at which point it will face reinspection.

Either the improvement notice will be dropped, or further action could be taken, including closing the store for two weeks.

Under current coronavirus regulation, Newport City Council has the power to issue improvement and closure notices to businesses that fail to comply.
