Carmarthenshire County Council Chair walking thousands of steps for charity

Carmarthenshire County Council Chair is stepping up his exercise locally to raise money for charity.

Cllr Ieuan Davies is taking it all in his stride as he aims to complete 30 miles before the end of his term in office and raise funds for Prostate Cancer and St Peter’s Church in Llanybydder.

Cllr Davies will record his steps and clock up the mileage on a fitness tracker watch.

The Chair is the first citizen of Carmarthenshire County Council and is elected at the annual meeting.

The duties include chairing full meetings of the Council and representing the Council at formal and ceremonial occasions in the County and beyond. He / she also welcomes visitors to the County and attends and supports events organised by local people and organisations.

During his / her year of office the Chair of the County Council usually raises funds for local charities, however, this has been restricted due to the Coronavirus pandemic. The Walrus Dip being one of those fundraising events that was cancelled due to the pandemic.

Once restrictions are lifted Cllr Davies hopes to do his own dip in the sea.

Cllr Davies said: “Unfortunately I haven’t been able to carry out as many fundraising activities as I would have liked due to the coronavirus pandemic and its restrictions. This walk is quite a challenge for me, but I am hoping people will be generous and dig deep in their pockets to support me in raising as much money as possible for these two organisations that are very close to me heart.”
