CARMARTHENSHIRE’S Labour leader on the county council has said that he welcomes the cautious approach to reopening schools in Wales.
Cllr James stated “In light of the announcement made by the Education Minister this afternoon, we have begun engagement with local authorities and teaching unions to consider the viability of schools reopening in Carmarthenshire.
Whilst we acknowledge the tremendous strain the lack of physical presence in the classroom is having on our children, we must be absolutely confident that the physical and mental well-being of our children are not risked by the swift reopening of school for all pupil ages. We must be equally confident that this change will not risk undoing the hard work to date on tackling coronavirus.
We appreciate that this is a logistical nightmare for our schools, especially with the announcement only covering a month of school term, with little information on the next academic year.
We will make every effort to ensure that residents concerns and thoughts are shared with planners, and continue to work with Officers to ensure that the plans reflect those views.”
