Cautionary welcome as agreement to improve mobile signal signed

MID and West Wales Member of the Senedd, Eluned Morgan has welcomed confirmation that an agreement has been reached that will improve mobile phone reception in Carmarthenshire.

After years of discussion, the UK Government and all four UK based mobile network operators have signed up to a plan that will increase 4G coverage nationwide as the networks agree to share masts in areas where signal is limited.  The UK Government Department for Communication, Media and Sport will also fund new masts to be built in locations currently not served by EE, O2, Vodafone or Three.

Eluned Morgan MS said: “As we know, there are still communities in Carmarthenshire with no or very poor mobile phone signal.  It is a huge frustration for businesses, residents and visitors.  I am pleased that, after so much discussion, an agreement has finally been reached between the UK Government and the mobile network operators to find a technical solution and a commitment to increasing much needed investment in rural infrastructure in the years ahead.”

“However, whilst this latest plan will increase 4G coverage everywhere with one network covering 95% of Wales, given the way radio frequencies work, it is likely that in some of our most rural areas pockets of no service will prevail.  I will continue to press for improvements wherever they exist in the county.”
