What is working well in Ceredigion’s social services – and where improvements can be made – have been highlighted in a recent assurance check by Care Inspectorate Wales (CIW).
The care inspectorate carried out an assurance check in May with a reporting letter sent to director of social service Sian Howys in July, that was presented to members of the governance and audit committee for noting on Thursday, September 9.
The check involved reviews of documentation, speaking to carers and those receiving care, reviewing case files, case tracking discussions, surveys and focus groups.
In Ceredigion inspectors found that the local authority was ensuring people, carers and practitioners are having their voices heard and their choices respected, with children also offered access to advocacy services.
The letter adds that practitioners felt supported with training and supervision, and were positive about their experience of working for Ceredigion County Council but some concerns about staffing levels – due to sickness, recruitment delays and transformation changes – were also raised.
Mrs Howys said on Thursday that “we do have many jobs being advertised at the moment” with challenges in recruitment recognised as a national issue.
CIW noted senior leader’s “good understanding” of a preventative approach and the ability to convey the strategic direction of the directorate.
It found that sufficiency of domiciliary care for adults continues to be a challenge with delays noted and the timeliness and quality of looked after children reviews were seen as good.
