THE Conservatives have won the Llantwit Fardre by-election for a seat on Rhondda Cynon Taf Council.

Sam Trask received 1,011 votes and saw off competition from Labour’s Graham Colk who got 656, Plaid Cymru’s Ioan Bellin who got 464, independent James Williams who got 162, independent Nick Tizard-Lee who got 80 and Liberal Democrat David Payne who got 73.

The by-election was held because the previous independent councillor Mike Diamond stepped down for personal reasons.

Mr Trask has lived in the area for over 20 years and works as an aircraft engineer at GE Aviation in Nantgarw where he has been since he left school at 16 and is a member of the Unite union there.

He has also been a community councillor representing Beddau on Llantrisant Community Council since 2017.

Mr Trask said:

“I’m truly honoured and humbled to have been elected to represent Llantwit Fardre and thank everyone for their support.

“Over the coming months, I hope to learn as much as I can from my ward colleague Joel James MS in order to be a hard-working and effective councillor as soon as possible.

“My priorities, to begin with, will be tackling speeding vehicles and ensuring RCT Council’s new Local Development Plan respects the wishes of Llantwit Fardre residents to protect the greenfield sites where housing should not be built.”
