Contract awarded for refurbishment and asbestos removal at old school

ASBESTOS will be removed from an old school before it is refurbished and extended for pupils to use.

The former Ysgol Glan Cleddau site at Scarrowscant Lane will become part of Haverfordwest’s federation school Ysgol Waldo Williams, which brought together Mount Airey, Fenton and Haverfordwest VC schools.

At cabinet on Monday, December 2 members approved the appointment of contractors W.B. Griffiths and Sons for the refurbishment of the old Ysgol Glan Cleddau, at risk, ahead of formal Welsh Government business case approval.

The minutes of October’s 21st Century Schools meeting, approved on Monday, include reference to approval of £95,000 at risk for the  removal of asbestos and the ongoing security at the site.

The tender for refurbishment and extension received only two submissions out of eight potential bids despite an extension on the deadline, the report notes.

At the October meeting the minutes state that “the September 2020 date for the opening of the new School was under considerable pressure as a result of the delay to the tender process.”

Work to strip out the asbestos is due to start this month.
