SWANSEA Canal Society has purchased a former builders merchant premises in Hebron Road, Clydach.

This derelict eyesore will now be renovated and adapted so it can be used for a range of community activities.

The purchase was made possible thanks to Welsh Government property enhancement development funding administered by Swansea Council, with additional grants from Vale Europe Limited and Clydach Community Council.

The Valleys Taskforce provided £700,000 for an extension to the current TRI programme for South-West regions, to allow smaller town centres to benefit from the funding. This project has benefitted from £74,500 investment and supports the Transforming Towns agenda.

Councillor Gordon Walker, chair of Swansea Canal Society, said:

“The society is grateful for the funding to purchase the building to create the Clydach Canal Centre.”

Councillor Robert Francis-Davies, Swansea Council’s cabinet member for investment, regeneration and tourism, added:

“We’re delighted to have helped the canal society secure funding for this exciting project.”

Member of the Senedd for Gower, Rebecca Evans MS said: “I am delighted to see Swansea Canal Society’s work go from strength to strength.”
