AN INDEPENDENT councillor who was elected to Carmarthenshire County Council as a Labour councillor and currently sits as the Leader of Llanelli Town Council has joined the Conservatives.

Cllr Shahana Najmi, who has represented the Lliedi ward on the Town Council since 2012 and as a County Councillor since 2017, said Llanelli Conservatives “share my ambition to really shake things up and make Llanelli a cleaner, greener and safer place to live, work and raise a family.”

“Since leaving the Labour Party in 2019, I’ve had a chance to think about how best to represent the Lliedi ward and speak up for residents in my area. And I’ve seen how hard Chris and Sara Griffiths work as town councillors for their residents in Lliedi, and how much they care about representing the people of our ward.

“So I’m proud to be joining their hardworking team who want to make a real difference and change Llanelli for the better. Moving forward, I want to prioritise actively listening to the people of Llanelli on the solutions to the problems facing our town and I’m really looking forward to getting out and hearing from residents on the things that matter most to them.

Cllr Chris Griffiths, the leader of the Conservative Group on Llanelli Town Council, has welcomed Cllr Najmi, saying:

“I’m proud to welcome Shahana into the Welsh Conservative Party. As the Leader of Llanelli Town Council and a Carmarthenshire County Councillor, she’s an incredibly strong addition to our team that’s already bursting with ideas of how to improve things in Llanelli.

“Being a councillor is about working together to improve the lives of people in our communities. And I’m looking forward to working with Shahana to take the fight to Labour next year and show that we’re the party with the ambition and drive to improve things in our town.”

Cllr Sara Griffiths, Conservative town councillor for Lliedi, said:

“Due to the pandemic, our economy is currently experiencing the deepest recession since records began, and evidence shows that Welsh communities could be amongst the worst hit in the UK.

“Llanelli Conservatives have a plan for change, to get our town back on track, and build a brighter, more prosperous future. So I’m chuffed that Shahana has joined us to help make that change happen and ensure that Llanelli builds back better from Covid-19, working with residents in the local community to come up with the solutions to take our town forward.
