Council revise offer on payment for winter gritting staff

THERE has been a breakthrough in negotiations between unions representing Carmarthenshire County Council’s winter gritting staff.

Unions had described the behaviour of the council in not paying a retainer for gritting staff while hiring contractors as ‘disgraceful’.

Now the local authority appears to have had a rethink and come to an agreement with the unions and gritting staff.

Ruth Mullen, Director of Environment, said: “Following lengthy but constructive discussions today, agreement has been reached on a revised offer in relation to the remuneration package for staff undertaking out of hours winter maintenance duties. As a result of these discussions, we can confirm that any industrial action will be suspended pending direct consultation with staff, which will happen early in January 2020.”
