COUNCILLOR Kevin Madge Labour Shadow Executive Board Member for Social Care & Health has condemned the decision to suspended Jonathan Edwards MP from Plaid Cymru for only one year after accepting a caution for common assault.
Cllr Madge said: “This decision does not help people suffering abuse in Carmarthenshire Plaid Cymru have not supported victims who have experienced of domestic abuse in Carmarthenshire, because of their hypocrisy.”
Cllr Madge stated that each year nearly two million people in UK suffer some forms of domestic abuse -1.3 million female victims 8.2per cent of the population and 600,000 male victims 4per cent.
He also referred to a women’s aid survivor survey, which he says has found that more than two thirds of domestic abuse survivors say domestic abuse is escalating under lockdown and 72 per cent said that their abuser has more control over their life since isolation measures were introduced.
Cllr Madge concluded by saying that Plaid Cymru have created a political smokescreen by only suspending Jonathan Edwards for one year.
He said: “This too avoids a by election in Carmarthen East & Dinefwr. In addition, he will not be around in Plaid Cymru when the campaign starts for the Welsh Government elections next year when Adam Price the Plaid Cymru Leader is their candidate in that election.
Cllr Madge is calling for the Plaid run Carmarthenshire County council to take greater action to reduce domestic abuse in Carmarthenshire and to put extra resources into local domestic abuse services.
