Councillor John E Jones JP installed as Town Mayor for Llanelli

THE annual mayor making ceremony took place at  Llanelli Town Council this evening, Wednesday (May 1) at the old vicarage.

Outgoing mayor Cllr David Darkin thanked his wife Kim, Cllr Suzy Curry and other civic dignitaries for their help and support during his mayoral year. Cllr Darkin also paid an emotional tribute to a former mayor Cllr Pam Edmunds who passed away in 2018.

Cllr Darkin went on to paint  a bright picture of the work and future of the Town Council saying that they had completed numerous asset transfers and that they had helped numerous community organisations. Cllr Darkin mentioned the many different organisations who had visited the Old Vicarage during his term of office.

It fell to Cllr Shahana Najmi to move that Cllr John Jones be duly installed as Town Mayor Llanelli for 2019/20. Cllr Jan Williams seconded the motion. Cllr Darkin put the proposal to the full town council and after a show of hands Cllr Jones was unanimously voted in as Town Mayor.

Following the investing of the incoming mayor with his chain and badge of office the Town Clerk Gary Jones invited the Town Mayor to make his Declaration of Acceptance of Office and thereafter to take the Chair.

The Town Mayor returned his thanks and Cllr Sean Rees then proposed the appointment of Mike Cranham as Deputy Town Mayor for the ensuing Municipal year.

The Deputy Mayor returned his thanks and there followed a presentation of bouquets.

Cllr John Jones the new Town Mayor moved a vote of thanks to the retiring Town Mayor Cllr David Darkin and presented him with an ex-mayoral Medallion.

The presentation of chains of office took place followed by further presentations of bouquets and gifts to Mrs Kim Darkin.

The Town Mayor invited a proposal to adjourn the meeting until 6.00pm on Wednesday 8th May 2019.
