Covid still circulating in our communities and increasing according to ONS statistics

NOT much is written about Covid any longer but the virus is still circulating in our communities. In the last week infection levels has risen more than 30%.

Whilst it is the case that the figures were higher in April it remains that today’s published data is the highest yet for a summer month.

The cause for the increase is a growth of Omricon BA.4 and BA.5 variants

The latest update from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) reveals that one in thirty people in Wales had the virus in the week ending June 24. It is an increase from the one in forty five people reported the week previous.

Across the UK some 2.3 million people estimated to have contracted the virus – it was 1.7m the week previous. The virus was impacting more on households in Scotland and Northern Ireland.

Hospitalisation due to the virus is also on the increase  with 465 people in Wales now in hospital – the week previous it was 324. In England almost 9000 are in hospital.

Regarding the spring vaccine roll out  16.5% of people over 75 have not taken up their fourth jab.
