Dyfed Primary Schools Athletics Championships returns to Carmarthen Leisure Centre

FOR THE 32nd time, the Dyfed (Carmarthenshire, Pembrokeshire and Ceredigion) Primary Schools Athletics Championships is coming to Carmarthen Leisure Centre Athletics Track, SA31 3NQ next week.

Hundreds of Dyfed schoolchildren of all ages are expected to be in action at the 2019 edition on Wednesday 15th May.

Sponsored by McDonalds, these championships have grown year on year since Hedydd Davies, Carmarthen Harriers President organised the first event back in 1990.

Ron Mounsey from McDonalds has been a great supporter of school athletics and cross country in Dyfed and said: “We at McDonalds are very pleased and proud to once again be sponsoring primary schools’ athletics competitions staged in Dyfed this year.

“It is a privilege to see so many young children taking part in sport.”

The event for boys and girls, starting at 5:00pm, will be: 100 metres, 70m Hurdles, 800 metres, 4 x 100m Relay, Long Jump, High Jump and Shot Put.

Schools can enter up to 4 competitors in the track events and only 1 competitor per school for the three field disciplines.

Medals will be awarded to the first 4 in each competition, presented by special guests.

There was plenty of excitement at last year’s event and saw a big number of competitors and spectators alike enjoy the late evening sunshine.

Ysgol Y Dderwen, Carmarthen have had great success in these championships over the years and they will look to bring another strong team to defend their title won in 2018. They will be in good form especially after picking up the Dyfed Primary Schools Cross Country Title just a few weeks ago at the Showground.

Ysgol Aberaeron always bring a large number down from Ceredigion with Ysgol Iau Llangennech, Ysgol Teilo Sant, Tenby Juniors and Ysgol Griffith Jones also set to be in the mix after securing top five 12 months back. The 2018 event saw over 35 schools present on the day and those numbers expect to climb again this year with other schools looking to challenge for the overall prize.

All schools should return the reply slip by Friday 10th May.

Anyone who wishes to get involved and take part should speak to their school PE teachers to see if they are entering teams. For a school that’s not entering teams, individuals are welcome to compete.

A few weeks later, there will be a full weekend of track and field athletics when the big Dyfed Secondary Schools Athletics Championships comes to the Johnstown facility over a two-day fixture in June.

The 3/400m Hurdles, 1000m Walk, 3000m, Pole Vault and Hammer events will get it all underway on Friday.
