First Minister meets Walford Hughes MBE by video-conference

TO mark VJ day the First Minister for Wales Mark Drakeford had a chat with Mr Walford Hughes MBE who lives in Cartref Tregardden, Bow Street, Aberystwyth.

In January of this year, Mr Hughes celebrated his 100th birthday

They discussed the time Walford Hughes spent in Burma during the Second World War. The meeting will be available to view tomorrow, 15 August on the Welsh Government and the First Minister’s social media channels – Twitter @fmwales and Facebook /WelshGovernment.

Mr Hughes took part in many Second World War campaigns including service in the ‘Forgotten Army’ in Burma in the Far East. Never forgetting what he and his comrades went through in Burma.

He became the National Secretary of the Burma Star Association sometime after the war. The association promotes the comradeship experienced during the Second World War in Burma and supports the veterans of the campaign and their widows or widowers.

Mr Hughes was later awarded the MBE for his conscientious and diligent work for the association.

Councillor Paul Hinge said:

“This is a great honour for Mr Walford Hughes MBE, and I am so pleased to hear that his contribution is being recognised this way.  Mr Hughes epitomises all that is good regarding the comradeship throughout the armed forces family and he never forgot those who paid the ultimate sacrifice and he always ensured where possible, in time of need, those who came back and the help they deserved.  He is now enjoying the twilight of his years in the comfort of Tregerddan where he is looked after in a much deserving  lordly manner.”
