Free digital platform is music to the ears of teachers and pupils

Every child and young person in Wales will have free access to a new bilingual digital music platform to help them discover their first musical notes.

Charanga Cymru is a digital platform which is now available free of charge to all schools in Wales as a teaching and learning resource to support the National Plan for Music Education. The bilingual platform has been developed through partnership work between the Welsh Government, Charanga and the Welsh Local Government Association.

To help teachers become familiar with the new platform, a resource pack for six weeks of work will be provided initially for each of the progression steps in the Expressive Arts Area in the Curriculum for Wales. Children can enjoy singing, listening and responding, improvising, and creating new music. The resources offered will grow as we work with more Welsh artists and contributors.

The platform includes an extensive training and professional development plan for teachers and practitioners to ensure that they feel confident to use the platform to support the delivery of music tuition during classroom learning. The content includes videos and personalised teaching and learning features.

For the first time, this platform will be available free of charge to schools across Wales, thanks to Welsh Government funding. Normally, schools must pay a subscription fee to access Charanga – a service that is already widely used in schools across the UK.

All teachers in Wales will be able to register and access the platform from 27 October.

The launch of the platform supports the National Music Service for Wales in widening access to music tuition and education, ensuring more children and young people can benefit from opportunities to learn to play an instrument as well as singing and making music in our schools and communities.

The Minister for Education and the Welsh Language, Jeremy Miles said:

“Charanga is recognised internationally as a fantastic digital music education resource. I’m delighted we’re able to build on this success with a fully bilingual version that is bespoke to Wales, which includes culturally-rich content and contributions from Welsh musicians. I’m delighted that every teacher and pupil will be able to access this engaging resource free of charge which will inspire our young people to develop their musical talent.

“This is the latest step in our implementation of the National Plan for Music Education, and an important way in which we are making access to music education available to all, regardless of their background or where they live.”

Councillor Ian Roberts (Flintshire), WLGA Spokesperson for Education said:

“As the new National Music service for Wales is rolled out, this is just the start of what we will have to offer children, young people and communities across Wales over the next three years as part of the National Music Plan. Charanga is a special resource that will support the teaching of music to children and young people in the classroom and give them this first opportunity of what music and instruments can give them.”

Mari Lloyd Pritchard, Co-ordinator of the National Music Service for Wales, said:

“It is important to emphasise that this is a digital platform that is special to us in Wales. It is not simply a translation of the platform in England and Scotland, but there is content that is completely Welsh and that shows the wealth of experience and fresh talents we have here.

“Not everyone has the confidence and musical expertise to be able to teach music in class, but Charanga is suitable for everyone. Our hope is that this, coupled with the invaluable support of local music services, will become an integral part of the school’s musical life.”

Bydd pob plentyn a pherson ifanc yng Nghymru yn cael mynediad am ddim i blatfform cerddoriaeth ddigidol ddwyieithog newydd i’w helpu i ddysgu eu nodau cerddorol cyntaf.

Mae Charanga Cymru yn blatfform digidol sydd bellach ar gael am ddim i bob ysgol yng Nghymru fel adnodd addysgu a dysgu i gefnogi’r Cynllun Cenedlaethol ar gyfer Addysg Cerddoriaeth. Mae’r platfform dwyieithog wedi’i ddatblygu drwy waith partneriaeth rhwng Llywodraeth Cymru, Charanga a Chymdeithas Llywodraeth Leol Cymru.

I helpu athrawon i ddod yn gyfarwydd â’r platfform newydd, bydd pecyn o adnoddau ar gyfer chwe wythnos o waith yn cael ei ddarparu i ddechrau ar gyfer pob un o’r camau cynnydd ym maes y Celfyddydau Mynegiannol yn y Cwricwlwm i Gymru. Gall plant fwynhau canu, gwrando ac ymateb, byrfyfyrio, a chreu cerddoriaeth newydd. Bydd yr adnoddau a gynigir yn cynyddu wrth i ni weithio gyda mwy o artistiaid a chyfranwyr Cymreig.

Mae’r platfform yn cynnwys cynllun hyfforddi a datblygu proffesiynol helaeth ar gyfer athrawon ac ymarferwyr er mwyn sicrhau eu bod yn teimlo’n hyderus i ddefnyddio’r platfform i gefnogi cyflwyno gwersi cerddoriaeth yn ystod y dysgu yn yr ystafell ddosbarth. Mae hefyd yn cynnwys fideos a nodweddion addysgu a dysgu wedi’u personoli.

Am y tro cyntaf, bydd y platfform hwn ar gael am ddim i ysgolion ledled Cymru, diolch i gyllid gan Lywodraeth Cymru. Fel arfer, mae’n rhaid i ysgolion dalu ffi tanysgrifio i gael mynediad i Charanga – sy’n wasanaeth sydd eisoes yn cael ei ddefnyddio’n helaeth mewn ysgolion ar draws y DU.

Bydd modd i bob athro yng Nghymru gofrestru a chael mynediad i’r platfform o 27 Hydref ymlaen.

Mae lansio’r platfform yn helpu Gwasanaeth Cerddoriaeth Cenedlaethol Cymru i ehangu mynediad i wersi cerdd ac addysg gerddoriaeth, gan sicrhau bod mwy o blant a phobl ifanc yn gallu elwa ar gyfleoedd i ddysgu chwarae offeryn a chanu a chreu cerddoriaeth yn ein hysgolion a chymunedau.

Dywedodd Gweinidog y Gymraeg ac Addysg, Jeremy Miles:

“Mae Charanga yn cael ei gydnabod yn rhyngwladol fel adnodd addysg cerddoriaeth digidol gwych. Rwy’n falch iawn ein bod yn gallu adeiladu ar y llwyddiant hwn gyda fersiwn gwbl ddwyieithog sy’n bwrpasol i Gymru, sydd â chynnwys a chyfraniadau diwylliannol cyfoethog gan gerddorion Cymreig. Rwy’n falch iawn y bydd pob athro a disgybl yn gallu defnyddio’r adnodd deniadol hwn am ddim a fydd yn ysbrydoli ein pobl ifanc i ddatblygu eu doniau cerddorol.

“Dyma’r cam diweddaraf wrth i ni weithredu’r Cynllun Cenedlaethol ar gyfer Addysg Gerddorol, ac mae’n un ffordd bwysig yr ydym yn sicrhau bod addysg gerddoriaeth ar gael i bawb, waeth beth yw eu cefndir neu ble maent yn byw.”

Dywedodd y Cynghorydd Ian Roberts (Sir y Fflint), Llefarydd Cymdeithas Llywodraeth Leol Cymru ar Addysg:

“Wrth i Wasanaeth Cerddoriaeth Cenedlaethol newydd Cymru gael ei gyflwyno, dyma fydd y cyntaf o’r hyn fydd gennym i’w gynnig i blant, pobl ifanc a chymunedau ledled Cymru dros y tair blynedd nesaf fel rhan o’r Cynllun Cerddoriaeth Cenedlaethol. Mae Charanga yn adnodd arbennig a fydd yn cefnogi addysgu cerddoriaeth i blant a phobl ifanc yn yr ystafell ddosbarth ac yn rhoi’r cyfle cyntaf iddynt brofi’r hyn y gall cerddoriaeth ac offerynnau ei roi iddynt.”

Dywedodd Mari Lloyd Pritchard, Cydlynydd Gwasanaeth Cerddoriaeth Cenedlaethol Cymru:

“Mae’n bwysig pwysleisio bod hwn yn blatfform digidol sy’n arbennig i ni yng Nghymru. Nid cyfieithiad o’r llwyfan yn Lloegr a’r Alban yn unig ydyw, ond mae yna gynnwys sy’n gwbl Gymreig a hynny’n dangos y cyfoeth o brofiad a thalentau ffres sydd gennym.

“Nid pawb sydd â’r hyder a’r arbenigedd cerddorol i allu dysgu cerddoriaeth yn y dosbarth, ond mae Charanga yn addas i bawb. Ein gobaith yw y bydd hyn, ynghyd â chefnogaeth amhrisiadwy gwasanaethau cerddoriaeth lleol, yn dod yn rhan annatod o fywyd cerddorol yr ysgol.”

Dywedodd Mark Burke, Sylfaenydd Charanga:

“Mae wedi bod yn bleser pur gweithio gyda Llywodraeth Cymru, CLlLC, CAGAC ac athrawon ledled Cymru i ddatblygu’r platfform arloesol hwn. Bydd darparu mynediad at dechnoleg addysgol o safon uchel yn cefnogi buddsoddiad Llywodraeth Cymru mewn datblygiad proffesiynol i athrawon a’i chynllun uchelgeisiol i roi offerynnau cerdd yn nwylo miloedd o blant. Mae’r tîm yma yn Charanga yn hynod falch o fod yn rhan o’r prosiect.”
