Free open day to showcase improved Newcastle Emlyn Leisure Centre

RESIDENTS living in and around Newcastle Emlyn are being offered the chance to try out new and improved facilities at their local leisure centre as a new all-inclusive membership launches for the first time.

Carmarthenshire County Council is unveiling a range of investments at the Newcastle Emlyn Leisure Centre as part of a free community open day on Friday, July 23.

People will be able to try out brand new gym features including top of the range equipment with the latest technology that allows people to surf the web, watch TV, log in to their social media accounts or watch YouTube videos whilst they work out.

A range of new spin bikes will enable coached and virtual spin classes to take place, and for the first time people will be able to take part in virtual classes led by instructors in the county’s other leisure centres screened live into the Newcastle Emlyn fitness studio.

The community-run swimming pool has also been upgraded, with energy saving measures installed to help provide a more comfortable user experience and save running costs and carbon consumption.

For the first time, the pool will become part of the council’s Actif membership offer, which provides access to the gym, pool and fitness classes in one affordable monthly plan.

Cllr Peter Hughes Griffiths, Executive Board Member for Culture, Sport and Tourism, said: “We are delighted to bring the pool in to our all-inclusive membership offer, adding more value to people who visit Newcastle Emlyn leisure centre,” he said.

“We have used the Covid-19 lockdown as an opportunity to invest in the centre, providing first-class facilities and equipment to the local community.

“We encourage people to come along to our free open day to sample what we’ve got to offer and to maybe start a new health and wellbeing journey.”

The investment is part of the council’s commitment to supporting people’s health and wellbeing, encouraging fitness, reducing the need to travel and supporting its aim towards net carbon zero.

Newcastle Emlyn is seeing a series of other investments as part of the council’s ‘Ten Towns’ project which sees targeted regeneration of key rural market towns.

The July 23 open day is open to everyone in the community, with free activities on offer throughout the day. Pre-booking essential.
