Get there early for Swansea Bay’s free fireworks display

THOUSANDS of people planning to enjoy this year’s fantastic free Swansea Bay Fireworks Display are being urged to get there early.

The display is free to all this year as part of the city’s 50th-anniversary celebrations and the best views will be from the prom between the Civic Centre and Brynmill Lane.

But families are being urged to set out early as traffic in the area is likely to be very busy.

Parking at six council car parks nearby opens at 5 pm and will cost just £5 per vehicle. The event opens from 6 pm with the display starting at 7 pm and finishing at 8 pm.

Robert Francis-Davies, the council’s cabinet member for investment, regeneration, and tourism, said: “Our annual fireworks event in Swansea’s biggest display, offering people a great sociable occasion with a real wow factor in a safe, family-friendly environment.

He added: “The fireworks display starts at 7 pm but there will also be walkabout entertainment in the main areas with superheroes and stilt-walkers before and after the display. There will also be a choreographed fire show at two locations on the beach, featuring fire-jugglers and other performers before the display. Food and drink will be available at both the Civic Centre and Cenotaph areas from 6 pm-8 pm.

“We’re expecting a huge crowd so we’d urge families to get there as early as they can in order to get parked-up so they can enjoy the event. It’s a great opportunity for people from across the area to help celebrate Swansea’s 50th anniversary as a city.”

Car parks will be available on a first-come, first-served basis at the Recreation Ground, the Lacrosse Field, Civic Centre (East and West), Guildhall, Baths Car Park and Paxton Street. Visitors should not park in side streets or in resident-only parking bays as enforcement is likely to be in place in order to ensure that disruption and access for local residents are kept to a minimum.

Traffic will be stopped briefly on Oystermouth Road / Mumbles Road at the end of the show to enable a large number of spectators to cross the road safely to get to their vehicles. Given a large number of vehicles likely to be leaving the area at the same time, traffic is anticipated to be heavy at the end of the event.

There will be two designated disabled access areas for disabled people and their families; one at the Civic Centre and one near the Cenotaph.

Additional litter collection points will be on the event site and Council litter collectors will be undertaking a clear up after the event and early the following morning. However, spectators are asked to help keep the area clean and tidy by disposing of their litter responsibly and preferably taking it home with them.

Due to a large number of visitors expected, people should not light fires or barbecues on the beach, nor should they bring fireworks with them.
