When it comes to dancing they don’t come more experienced than Llanelli’s own strictly legendary Ann Jones. Ann has been teaching dance for decades and is one of Wales’ longest serving dance teachers.
Born in Felinfoel but now living in Burry Port Ann has taught stars of stage, TV and radio how to dance.
It all started when at age three Ann was placed on the bar of the Royal Oak in Felinfoel and began to dance. Her parents sent her to learn ballet at age 8 but Ann realised that wasn’t for her. For one, she said that she was too tall. Ann branched out into ballroom dancing and the rest is history.
Ann said: “People of all ages can enjoy dancing. It really is great for keeping fit. You have Strictly but that is an offshoot from the original programme Come Dancing, which lasted a very long time. My first teacher was Josephine Pollard.
“Ballroom dancing will always be fashionable. It is one of the most popular hobbies second to fishing. My interest has always been in freestyle dancing.
“Even today it is surprising how many females will get up and dance together. The men won’t either because they don’t want to or can’t. Two women dancing together has always been acceptable. All forms of dance interest me. In my career I have covered all sorts of dance. I introduced line dancing to Wales. I have had a very eclectic career.”
Ann says that there is no secret to dance. “You just have to have rhythm.”
If you would like to get fit or just enjoy a whirl around the dance floor Ann is welcoming all to her new dancercise class at the Sandy Road Community Centre beginning on Wednesday March 16th. The dancercise class starts at 7pm and is followed by a class in East Coast Swing from 8:10pm.
