Glangwili Hospital trauma ward celebrates over 120 days without pressure ulcers

PRESSURE ULCERS can be extremely upsetting for patients but staff on a busy trauma ward at Glangwili General Hospital are celebrating excellent progress this year by achieving over 100 days without hospital-acquired pressure damage.

The team has invested in special training, working in collaboration with our Tissue Viability Team, Quality Improvement Team and Practice Development Nurse to ensure pressure damage prevention is a top priority, with no pressure ulcers being reported in 120 days – and counting!

The ward has also undertaken a trial on special new ‘Hybrid Mattresses.’ The mattresses are combination of both foam and air and designed for individuals at risk of developing pressure damage. Patients and staff have both responded positively to the mattresses and a number have been purchased for Teifi Ward as a result.

James Sheldon, Senior Nurse Manager for Trauma and Surgery at Hywel Dda, said: “For some wards this may not be so unusual, but we’ve been kept very busy on Teifi Ward which regularly comes up at our pressure damage scrutiny meetings.  It was only when I checked that I found out the last time Teifi Ward had a pressure damage-free month was in 2015 – and now we’ve had three months in a row and counting”.

“I am extremely proud of the ward team and am confident they will continue to sustain this excellent progress in reducing avoidable hospital-acquired pressure damage.”
