THREE Gwendraeth Valley schools held a community singalong ahead of the World Cup Quarter Final between Wales and France today, Wednesday (Oct 16).
Ysgol Carwe, Ysgol Gwynfrynne and Ysgol Ponthenri joined in voice with a large number of people from the surrounding communities to sing Sospan Fach, Calon Lan and the Welsh National Anthem at Pontyates Miners Welfare Hall.
The event was inspired by a recent programme which saw Bryn Terfel teaching the Welsh rugby squad some songs.
The head of the three schools, Rhian Evans said that the event had been a great success and helped bond young and old alike in the community. As well as the singing there were plenty of Welshcakes and pots of tea on offer.
Derek Rowlands was one of the proud grandparents in attendance. He said: "I have come along today to join in with the singing and watch my grandson taking part."
Ron Lewis was attending to watch his great grandchildren taking part in the event. When he was asked about the expected result for the Welsh team on Sunday he said: "I expect our team to win. We should have won it 4 years ago and, if it wasn't for the referee on the day, I am certain we would have".
Molly Jones was in the audience and had travelled 34 miles to attend the event. She said: "I have come along today to take part in the event and watch my grandson Ifan singing".
Marilyn Pinney and Lynda Jones were in the audience and took part in the singing. They were there as representatives for Pontyates and, although their grandchildren Daniel Pinney and Driw Emyr Bevan were not at the event today, as they are only 7 year olds, they look forward to seeing them taking part in future years.
Bill Savage was another member of the audience who happily joined in. Bill a freelance gardener and local resident is also the local church warden. He said: "Events like these are really important for our community and I am happy to be here taking part."
More events are planned at the hall. The schools have participated in fashion shows and a village history project to date.
