COUNCIL chiefs are confident that ongoing demolition works to restore traffic access along Bangor High Street are “on schedule.”

Sections of the city’s main high street remain closed off to vehicles since the major blaze in December 2019.

But council officers remain expectant that the work will be completed by early June.

After firefighters were called to a fire in a flat above Japanese restaurant Noodle One, the section between the city’s cathedral and the Varsity bar has remained closed off due to the need for temporary scaffolding on the street, which kept both standing.

With both Noodle One and the neighbouring Morgan’s clothes shop having suffered extensive damage, an application was made to raze both buildings to the ground after being described as “in a significantly unsafe condition” and “in risk of imminent collapse,”

But in an update this week Gwynedd Council has confirmed that ongoing work to demolish fire damaged properties, which started in February, “remains on schedule.”

The authority confirmed that following the completion of the first part of the work, to strengthen the road to support a crane, the main demolition work is now underway.

With engineers EWP working on behalf of the building owners, the crane completed its work at the end of April and has since left the site, with the scaffolding now being lowered as the buildings begin to come down.

Gwynedd Council’s Head of Environment Dafydd Wyn Williams, added: “I am very pleased to report that work on this part of Bangor High Street is going well and is proceeding as scheduled.

“I can also confirm that the work carried out by ADRA at the junction of Lon Popty and High Street is now complete.

“We have also contacted the utility companies regarding being ready to proceed with essential reconnection work before the road reopens.

“In the meantime, the road remains closed as the demolition work continues. But we are still on schedule to re-open in late May or early June.”
