COUNCIL workers have issued a warning to a KFC restaurant in Bridgend for breaching coronavirus regulations.

Officials gave an improvement notice to KFC, The Designer Outlet, Derwen, after finding members of staff working without face coverings on Wednesday January 27.

Documents from the Shared Regulatory Service (SRS) show a member of staff came behind the counter without wearing a mask while three other workers were wearing masks without covering their noses.

The restaurant also failed to take measures to enable social distancing, records show.

A spokesperson for KFC said: “Our top priority is always operating responsibly and we have strict measures and procedures in place to ensure the safety of both our team members and guests.

“We have worked closely and proactively with Bridgend Council to resolve any issues.

“The notice has now been taken down after a revisit and we are confident our measures adhere to all the government guidelines.”

The SRS, a partnership between South Wales Police and Bridgend, Cardiff and the Vale of Glamorgan councils, carries out checks on licensed premises to ensure they comply with government guidelines.

Businesses are usually given 48 hours to comply with the terms of an improvement notice. Failure to comply can result in closure, a fixed penalty notice, or being taken to court.

The Welsh Government website states staff working in indoor public spaces must wear masks “if they are in an area accessible to the public”.

It also states staff who are not facing the public may also need to wear face coverings “if physical distancing cannot be maintained”.

For example employers may require staff to wear masks indoors “as a reasonable measure to minimise the risk of exposure to coronavirus on the premises unless there are strong reasons not to”.

The SRS has issued 54 improvement notices to businesses in Bridgend county borough and temporarily closed five for breaching coronavirus regulations.

So far no businesses in the area have been permanently closed for rule breaches.

Officers have given notices to 42 businesses in Cardiff and 36 businesses in the Vale of Glamorgan.
