Labour has won a by-election in Cardiff gaining an extra councillor in the ward of Heath and Birchgrove.
The by-election was held on Thursday, November 11, after former independent councillor Fenella Bowden recently retired.
The results mean the ward is now represented by two Labour councillors and one Conservative councillor, strengthening Labour’s overall majority in the city.
The new Labour councillor, Julie Sangani, said the result was an “achievement for Welsh Labour” and added: “Everybody has come together to support our community. My priority is still the same—education, environment and improvements for the local community.”
The full results are:
Julie Sangani, Labour, 1,729 votes, 47 per cent
Peter Hudson, Conservative, 1,128 votes, 31 per cent
Kathryn Lock, Liberal Democrats, 561 votes, 15 per cent
Gwennol Haf, Plaid Cymru, 250 votes, seven per cent
A total of 3,679 ballots were received, meaning a 38.4 per cent turnout.
Propel’s candidate had to stand down at the last minute due to a sudden change in family circumstances. The Green party has recently formed a coalition with Plaid Cymru in Cardiff, with a joint list of candidates.
As the ward has historically been evenly split between the parties, the results could be seen as a possible indicator for how the next local elections in Cardiff might go. In May next year, voters across Wales will choose who should run the 22 local authorities, including Cardiff.
