Leader warns Ceredigion ‘not out of the woods’ regarding Covid-19

Ceredigion “is not out of the woods” when it comes to covid but the situation is improving the council’s leader has said.

Cllr Ellen ap Gwynn updated cabinet members on Tuesday (November 2) and said there were “signs that things are improving” with a drop in the rate per 100,000 to 455, from 600 the previous week, according to data up to October 28.

Cllr ap Gwynn added that schools had reopened and it was hoped an increase in cases would not be seen but the highest number of cases was still being seen in those aged 10 to 19, reminding people that they should not attend school if other family members have covid-19.

“All counties in Wales, apart from Wrexham, have seen a reduction but it’s early days and our neighbours in Pembrokeshire and Carmarthenshire are still high. So, the signs are better but we are not out of the woods,” she said.

Cllr ap Gwynn added that there were currently five people with coronavirus in Bronglais Hospital as well as 38 in Glangwili, 45 in Withybush Hospital and 24 in Prince Phillip, reminding people to be “vigilant” as the situation “isn’t great.”

Ceredigion’s care homes were still struggling with staff illness with five homes in the red category and three in amber, indicating a “slightly worse” situation, she added, as well as 27 council staff ill with covid.

The “top and the south” of Ceredigion appear to be “suffering more” cabinet heard with the highest number of cases in the Borth and Aberystwyth south area.
