LLANELLI’S Member of the Senedd Lee Waters has congratulated pupils at Ysgol Five Roads on being awarded a grant from the Royal Society.
The grant will support their project which is investigating the impacts of sustainable transport on air pollution.
Joining the pupils over Zoom, Mr Waters, who is Welsh Government’s Deputy Transport Minister, said “I was delighted to speak to such a switched on group of young people who want to get hands on when it comes to environmental issues.”
The pupils will work with a senior lecturer at University of Wales Trinity St. David and academics involved in nuclear fusion to explore how more environmentally friendly forms of transport could benefit the air we breathe.
Five Roads will also partner up with a school in Lesotho as part of a global learning project on the environment, helping pupils discover their shared experiences.
With the new Wales Transport Strategy going out to consultation last week, Mr Waters listened to the eco-committees views on making road crossings safer and where to build electric car charging points in the community.
“Staff at Five Roads are really stretching their pupils to think big about the challenges facing the way we move around” He said, “We had a really good discussion about why the improvement in air quality during the first lockdown is something we should all be fighting for, and they had some great ideas about how we can decarbonise our travel patterns; the school should be proud as punch to have such driven young people.”
