THE first Wales opinion poll, since Liz Truss is now Prime Minister does not make happy reading for her. The Poll of over 1,000 people, conducted between September 20-22 reveals that the majority of people in Wales don’t trust Liz Truss’ government to make the right decisions for the country.
Also nearly half of respondents thought hat Ms Truss would be a poor Prime Minister.
The Barn Cymru poll, conducted by YouGov for ITV Cymru Wales and Cardiff University, reveals that Labour’s standing in Wales is at 46%, the Conservatives 23%, Plaid Cymru 15%, Welsh Liberal Democrats a5%, Reform UK 5% and the Green Party 3%.
It is surptising that Reform UK ( its antecedents being UKIP and the Brexit Party) is polling at 5% since the party does not seem to be currently that active in Wales.
The poll also asked about voting intentions for the Senedd. Labout did less well here on 40%, Conservatives 20%, Plaid Cymru 22%, Welsh Liberal Democrats 6%, Reform UK 5% and the Greens 3%.
With reaction to the so called ‘mini’ budget ( when it was anything but ‘mini’) being considerably less than enthusiastic, especially on reducing taxation for people earning over £150K a year and the removal of the cap on bankers’ bonuses will be interesting to see what lies ahead for the new Prime Minister.
Already there are rumours of Tory MPs submitting letters of no confidence in her. So much unceretainty surrounds her at present with the value of the pound sterling under pressure, talk of more interest rate increases and therefore mortgage rates as a consequence.
The international money markets are apprehensive as well over the extent of government borrowing and the medium term prospects for the public finances and the economy.
