Llanelli’s MP, MS and leader of Carmarthenshire Labour thank residents for Covid actions

LLANELLI’S Labour representatives have thanked residents for helping to get control of the recent surge in coronavirus infections.

When the town went into local measures on 26th September, the rate of infection in Llanelli was 152 per 100,000 of the population.

Figures released on Friday 9th shows the rate of infection now down to 99.9 per 100,000 people, but concerningly, the rate across the whole of Carmarthenshire is now 53.5 per 100,000.

The First Minister Mark Drakeford also confirmed on Friday that children could now take part in organised sporting activities if these take place outside the Health Protection Zone’s boundaries.

Member of the Senedd Lee Waters said “These measures have been really tough on the community, really tough. I am glad that Public Health Wales and Hywel Dda Health Board listened to our calls for Llanelli specific figures to be published weekly.”

He added “Everyone’s efforts are beginning to work. The number of cases have fallen in the last seven days, but they are still a lot higher than they should be. Anything over 50 cases per 100,000 is a cause for concern. – we have all got to keep doing our bit to keep this under control.”

Cllr. Rob James welcomed the figures, saying “The rate of transmission has reduced by a third since these measures were introduced. I have seen as a Councillor in Llanelli town that residents have adhered to the rules, and I’m glad to see the data backs this up. We must continue to work collectively to drive this down, whilst tackling the rise of cases in the rest of the county.”

Nia Griffith MP said “I’d like to thank everyone here in Llanelli who has helped to bring the COVID-19 figures down from 151 to 99 per hundred thousand in just a fortnight. This is a real credit to efforts by the community, because once figures start going up, it’s a real challenge to reverse them. We mustn’t let our guard down now, and, if we can just keep going for a bit longer, hopefully we will see this trend continue downwards, so that it will become possible to lift restrictions. “
