Llanelli’s ‘real’ Christmas Carnival a Categorical Success

Crowds lined the route of the Llanelli Winter Carnival this evening after having missed last year’s in place of a virtual carnival due to Covid-19.

There was a slight delay to the parade following a car crash along the route.

Homes and gardens along the road were decked with christmas lights. A large Christmas tree stood illuminated at the Sandy Road community centre.

Families dressed up against the cold and waited for the parade to go by. Floats were brightly decorated with themes ranging from The Greatest Showman to Disney as well as representation from the RNLI, a tractor rally and numerous community organisations.

Food stalls, music and a funfair were also on offer in parts of the town with more entertainment taking place through the evening at the various bars and cafes in and around Llanelli.

Historically this has been one of the largest winter carnivals in Wales and it’s continued success is attributed to the many volunteers and bucket shakers from the Llanelli Round Table.

A large crowd gathered on Church Street just in front of Llanelli Town Hall to watch a fireworks display bring an end to a successful ‘real’ carnival.

Llanelli Town Mayor Michael Cranham and Deputy Mayor Sean Rees were both in attendance with their families at the Carnival.

Councillor Cranham said:

“The Christmas Carnival is one of the highlights of the year for thousands of local families across Llanelli, and those visiting from further afield. We are proud as a Town Council to play our part in organising the carnival along with the County and Rural Councils.

“Our congratulations go to all of the organisers, volunteers and participants at this year’s event. Also to the Round Table for once again ensuring the smooth running of the parade. It was an honour to be part of the judging panel on what has been a very enjoyable night.”

Councillor Rees added:

“Events like tonight really do help promote the town’s image and show what we can do here in Llanelli. We recognise all of the hard work and dedication which has been put in by everyone.

“It has been great to see the festive atmosphere throughout the Town Centre with so many getting into the Christmas spirit.”
