Local Politicians welcome £20m investment in Prince Philip Hospital

Two champions of Llanelli’s Prince Phillip hospital have welcomed a £20 Million Christmas announcement from the Welsh Government to safeguard its future.

Llanelli’s Member of the Senedd Lee Waters MS and Member of Parliament Nia Griffiths MP have been campaigning for additional services to come to the hospital have warmly welcome the significant investment in the town.

The Welsh Government funding will build two new operating theatres. They will include preparation rooms, anaesthetic rooms, changing facilities and a recovery area.

The theatres will help address surgical waiting lists, which have increased significantly during the Covid-19 pandemic. The theatres will have capacity to run 24 sessions a week, covering procedures including orthopaedics, general surgery, urology, vascular and laser therapy for varicose veins.

These new facilities are expected to deliver approximately 4,600 additional day cases per year.

The two new facilities are going to not only benefit people in Llanelli and the wider Hywel Dda region, but it is also anticipated that patients across the wider south west Wales region will benefit from the additional capacity this development will enable.

Nia Griffiths MP added:

“This funding really is good news, particularly for all the people who have had their treatment delayed because of the pandemic. It is great that the funding will also allow the Health Board to recruit additional clinical, theatre and support staff”.

Lee Waters MS commented on the announcement:

“This is a vote of confidence in Prince Phillip hospital by the health board and will significantly upgrade the facilities we have in Llanelli to carry out planned operations. This not only helps secure its future but will be a big help in bringing waiting lists down”
