Major construction site re-opened following suspension

WORK has resumed on a major construction project in Carmarthenshire that was put on hold in March due to Coronavirus.

After careful consideration and in line with Welsh Government guidance, Carmarthenshire County Council has agreed with its contractor Alun Griffiths Ltd to recommence work on its Cross Hand East Strategic Employment Site.

A new completion date of September has now been set for the 24 acre (10 hectare) site that will create seven more plots for employment premises to accommodate around 500 new jobs.

Construction teams were back on site on Tuesday, April 28, exactly a month since works were suspended.

Leader of the council, Cllr Emlyn Dole, who heads up the portfolio for regeneration and economic development, said: “Recommencing works will protect valuable jobs in the construction sector as well as laying the foundation for Carmarthenshire’s economic recovery as we emerge from the current situation.

“While the economic landscape will look very different going forward, having ready sites with the right infrastructure will provide a strong basis for local and regional economic resilience.

“When complete, the Cross Hand East Strategic Employment Site will provide a further seven plots to accommodate up to 500 jobs – we cannot underestimate how important it will be to support the local economy by providing this kind of opportunity.

“We have taken the decision to allow these works to restart following careful consideration and only because we are satisfied that works can be undertaken safely and in compliance with all the relevant guidance.”

Richard Tidmarsh for Alun Griffiths Ltd, said: “We would like to reassure the public that all works are being undertaken following strict government guidance and with suitable arrangements in place for staff to work safely.

“This has been a troubling time for the construction industry and it is great to be back on site.”

The Cross Hand East Strategic Employment Site has received £2.3million of European Regional Development Fund assistance and is part of the Welsh Government’s Strategic Site programme.

The works will now be scheduled to complete in September 2020 with some landscaping works taking place in the autumn planting season.

Carmarthenshire County Council and Alun Griffiths Ltd respectfully ask that members of the public respect the social distancing guidance and do not jeopardise workers’ safety.
