Man charged with murder following incident on Tewkesbury Walk, Newport

AT approximately 11.55 pm on Thursday 14th November 2019, the ambulance service reported that a man had been found unresponsive within a property on Tewkesbury Walk, Newport.

A man from the Newport area was found with serious head injuries and was taken to the Royal Gwent Hospital where he has since sadly died as a result of his injuries. He can now be named as 22-year-old Shafiul Islam from the Shaftesbury area of Newport.  Our thoughts remain with his family, who are being supported by specialist officers.

On Saturday 16th November 2019, three people were arrested on suspicion of attempted murder, including a 46-year-old man and a 37-year-old woman, both from the Neath area and a 41-year-old man from the Pontardawe area. All three have since been released under investigation.

Following further enquiries by Gwent Police, three further arrests were made.

On Sunday 17th November 2019, a 22-year-old man from the Newport area was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder.

On Tuesday 19th November 2019 a 41-year-old man from the Cardiff area was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder.

On Wednesday 20th November 2019 a 32-year-old man from the Newport area was also arrested on suspicion of attempted murder.

Following the death of Shafiul Islam, on Wednesday 20th November 2019, these three men were re-arrested on suspicion of the murder of Shafiul Islam.

The 22-year-old man from the Newport area has since been charged with murder; he appeared in Newport Magistrates Court yesterday, (November 21) and has been remanded in custody until his next court date.
