AS part of Foster Care Fortnight, the Celtic Manor Resort generously offered two rounds of golf to Gwent’s local authority foster carers.

Several male carers accepted the kind gesture and had a few relaxing hours on the Roman Road course.

Local authorities value all their foster carers but recognise that peer support is important particularly as many people still see the role as traditionally a female one.

Our experience is that people from many different backgrounds can offer them love, security, and happy home to children and young people.

For some children, male foster carers can be the first positive male role model in their lives and they can play a vital role in shaping their futures.

Newport has a #MenWhoCare group that offers peer support and is part of the package of extra assistance that is provided for those who foster for councils in addition to allowances and professional support from social workers.

Foster Care Fortnight is the Fostering Network’s annual campaign to raise the profile of fostering and to show how foster care transforms lives. This year it runs until May 23 and the theme is #WhyWeCare.
