Merthyr man records classic song of thanks to NHS workers

THE Valleys of South Wales are well known for their musical heritage, and one Merthyr resident who works for the Welsh Ambulance Service has helped in saying a tuneful thank you to the NHS.

Lyndon Powell, a Quality Assurance Manager for the service, also plays guitar in a local group The Electric 80’s Band and put out the call to singers in the area to join them in a virtual version of the Simon and Garfunkel classic Bridge Over Troubled Water.

The poignant song has become a bit of an anthem for all health care and key workers during the Coronavirus pandemic, so was the perfect track to pay tribute to them.

Lyndon said: “We really wanted to do something to thank all NHS staff and key workers.

“Merthyr is a very musical place with lots of singers and musicians around so we put out a message on social media to see what the interest would be.”

Fifteen singers came forward to perform on the track including nurses and the manager of a care home.

The music on the track was performed by Lyndon’s band, and frontman Andrew Owen took control of producing it and putting all the submitted voices and videos together.

“It was great fun to make,” said Lyndon, who has served 29 years with the Welsh Ambulance Service.

“I sat up in the attic to record my bit and after Andrew had mixed it we released it to coincide with the NHS’ 72nd birthday earlier in July.

“It’s had over 30,000 views on Facebook so far and we have now put it up on YouTube under the heading ‘Merthyr Singers & Entertainers say thank you to the NHS’ which we hope will allow more people to see it.”
