WORK on a long-awaited multi-storey car park in Swansea’s SA1 is due to start early next year.
It will have 298 spaces over four storeys, plus 14 motorbike spaces, and a plant-covered “living wall”.
The Welsh Government has put the Langdon Road project, which was given planning approval by Swansea Council last summer, out to tender.
A multi-storey car park for 425 vehicles at the Langdon Road site was first given the green light in 2011, but nothing was built and planning permission lapsed.
Welsh Government-owned SA1 covers nearly 100 acres and has a number of temporary car parks for office workers and visitors.
Asked for an update on the multi-storey proposal, a spokesman said: “Following the granting of planning permission we are now in a tendering process marketing the opportunity to develop and manage the car parks at SA1.
“Bids are due back shortly and we are hoping to appoint a developer with construction commencing early next year.”
The former dockland site is now home to the University of Wales Trinity Saint David’s £300 million SA1 Swansea Waterfront campus.
And work has just got under way on a new HMT Sancta Maria Hospital, plus a new 645-bed riverside student development.
Some SA1 developments have replaced car parks, although two new ones with a combined total of 211 spaces were given planning permission last year.
