National Award for Carmarthen Harriers Athletics Club President

CARMARTHEN Harriers Athletics Club President and Dyfed Schools AA Secretary Dr Hedydd Davies is the recipient of this year’s Sportshall Athletics “Services to Sportshall Athletics Award.”

The Sportshall Team welcomed nominations from all corners of the United Kingdom to recognise individuals who have contributed so much to sportshall athletics in their area and made this athletic sport go from strength to strength.

After the closing date, the nominations were looked at and it was decided to present the 2019 to West Wales’ Davies.
Since 1992 he has organised three indoor sportshall athletics events at Carmarthen Leisure Centre (two at secondary school level for years 7 & 8 and years 9 & 10 and one at primary school) which has been well attended over many years.

In addition, he has selected and organised Dyfed secondary schools to compete in the Welsh sportshall athletics finals.
In the past, many Dyfed teams have won at the Welsh finals and gone on to represent Wales at the UK finals. 

A few years back, a Dyfed school athlete from St Michaels School won the UK U15 all-rounder competition.

Typical indoor athletics events in championships and schools’ competitions include the 2 lap, 4 lap, 6 lap, 4 x 1 lap relay, 4 x 2 lap relay, 8 lap paarlauf, standing long jump, standing triple jump, shot put, vertical jump and speed bounce.

The award was presented to Hedydd at the 2019 UK Sportshall finals competition at Manchester last month.
In the North West. It was presented by George Bunner MBE, creator of Sportshall athletics and the individual who came to Carmarthen in 1992 to demonstrate primary school sportshall athletics.
