Neil Hamilton urges schools to ensure children educated about Remembrance Day

NEIL Hamilton, MS for Mid & West Wales, and Leader of UKIP is urging schools in Wales, to ensure children are educated about Remembrance Day.

Mr Hamilton, a member of the Climate Change, Environment and Rural Affairs committee is backing a campaign by the Royal British Legion who have launched a series of new Remembrance educational resources.

As a long-time supporter of the charity he said:

“I am delighted to support such a worthwhile initiative and call on teachers all over Wales to sign up for these resources.

“Teaching Remembrance is vital if we want our children to understand more about how Britain was created and the sacrifices which were made across all the UK’s communities.

“It is also important to remember those who served, both on the front-line and at home, and what they endured.

“In these challenging times, with the continued presence of coronavirus, it is only right children and young people learn about Remembrance and its relevance to what is happening today.

“Our Armed Forces provide an incredible service to our country, often in ways we don’t necessarily see, but all of which impact our lives. I am happy promote any initiatives to highlight this important part of our history.”

As the national champions of Remembrance, the Royal British Legion is committed to ensuring that Remembrance is understood and available to every child and community in the UK. They understand that our shared heritage of Remembrance helps bring communities together and ensures that we recognise the service and sacrifice of past and present generations. 

To support this, the Legion are offering a range of learning materials for Key Stages 1-4, with Key Stage 5 resources to follow, for children to engage with in the classroom and at home.  Welsh Language resources are also available.

These come in a variety of formats, from book clubs and lessons to assemblies and arts projects. Teacher and parent notes accompany these child-focused resources to ensure their relevance both in the classroom and at home. Created in partnership with the National Literacy Trust and others, enabling teachers, parents and families to bring Remembrance to life.

In this unique and challenging year, these resources support the wellbeing of children by giving them the space to explore their experiences and feelings of the Covid-19 pandemic, drawing parallels between now and the Second World War generation, highlighting the relevance of Remembrance to today.
