New housing plan will help to transform Llanelli’s Tyisha ward

CARMARTHENSHIRE County Council is set to take the next exciting step to transform Tyisha by inviting potential partners to share their vision for new housing and creating a vibrant community.

It forms a part of the council’s ambitious plans to regenerate the Tyisha ward and the wider Llanelli town centre area which is undergoing massive investment.

An early market engagement exercise is being launched which gives potential partners the opportunity to express their interest in working with the council to transform the area commonly known as ‘the four Tys’, which are set to be demolished later this year.

The plans include building a modern, mixed-use housing development which meets the needs of the community, as well as improvements to existing homes and the creation of community facilities and green spaces for everyone to enjoy.

The council is inviting potential partners to share fresh and innovative ideas on how best to deliver this project.

Any plans should take into consideration the strategic importance of Tyisha, as it provides an important link between the town centre and the multi-million-pound Pentre Awel project.

The council wants to make Llanelli a place where people want to live and work and in investing heavily in the town centre by bringing empty shops back into use and creating much-needed new homes.

Llanelli has been allocated £40million for a proposed “Wellness and Life Sciences Village” at Delta Lakes fromthe Swansea Bay City deal

The landmark Pentre Awel development will put Llanelli on the map bringing together business, research, education, community healthcare and modern leisure facilities all at one prime location along the coastline.

Cllr Linda Evans, chair of the Tyisha steering group and cabinet member for housing said: “The early market engagement process is a step towards our plans to regenerate Tyisha; a unique plan which looks to transform the entire ward. Residents have told us what they need and want from Tyisha and I am delighted that we are now in a position to start delivering these ambitious goals.

“Tyisha has a number of social, economic and environmental challenges, but I know that the community is strong and we will work together to tackle these issues. With the help of residents, businesses and our partners we can put our ambitious plans into action to create a sustainable community.

“I look forward to seeing the ambitious, modern and forward-thinking plans potential partners present to us.”

The council is also working to assess the future of the former Copperworks school site but it is not included within this Early Market Engagement process. Any future plans for the site will take into consideration the historical importance of the building as well as its prominent position within the community.

The early market engagement process forms part of the council’s Transforming Tyisha project which aims to regenerate the area through increasing community safety, developing housing and community facilities and improving the environment.

The council is working in partnership with a number of key organisations including the police and Llanelli Town Council to drive forward the regeneration plans, and a community steering group has been set up.
