THE preferred strategy for new houses, town centre growth and other planning developments across the county will be put to the public this summer.

Ceredigion County Council’s thriving communities scrutiny committee took a first look at the draft strategy on Thursday, May 30.

A replacement Local Development Plan has been developed following a review last year and changes to legislation which have meant amendments needed to be made.

One of the main changes is a reduction in the number of houses it was projected that the area would need from 6,000 to 3,000 due to changes in Welsh Government policy and population fluctuations.

This includes a housing requirement of 2,437 and the approximately 600 existing commitments and consents.

The previously agreed Local Development Plan ran from 2007-2022, with the replacement now extended to 2033.

Councillors called for a more reader-friendly version of the lengthy document to be published online and were told it would be available as part of the public consultation.

There were questions raised about the feasibility of developing homes only where there is sustainable transport systems, as outlined by Welsh Government, in such a rural area as well as the management of green spaces in towns.

A consultation will be launched this month and the call for candidate sites will be extended, with both due to finish on September 5.
