New Quay RNLI has a busy week with new lifeboat trials

Last week New Quay RNLI was very busy with the next phase of launch and recovery trials before receiving their new lifeboat in 2024.

The station welcomed a Shannon class all-weather lifeboat with the full SLRS (Shannon Launch and Recovery System) consisting of a state of the art tractor and trailer that arrived via landing craft.
On Tuesday afternoon (21 June) visitors to the harbour were greeted with an unusual sight as the 33.2m barge, Carly, sailed right up the lifeboat slipway to allow the equipment to be driven off. In the meantime a relief Shannon class lifeboat, 13-07 Reg, was collected from Pwllheli harbour by New Quay RNLI crew members and the RNLI’s Shannon roll out team.

While the equipment was in New Quay launch and recovery trials were carried out on the beach and the lifeboat and carriage were driven up the slipway and into the boathouse to assess the suitability of the current facilities.

Roger Couch, New Quay RNLI’s Lifeboat Operations Manager said, “Everything went swimmingly and the launch and recovery trials were a great success. The great news is that the Shannon class lifeboat and SLRS fits into the boathouse with only minor adjustments required. We think she looks at home in the boathouse and we’re looking forward to seeing our new boat in there before too long.

“We would like to thank the RNLI coastal support staff and the Shannon roll out team for making it happen.”

Pete Yates, one of New Quay RNLI’s crew members, “Watching the first trial launch of the Shannon class was a very powerful moment for all involved with New Quay lifeboat station! All this is only possible because of your generosity and donations. If you would like to make a donation to support our lifeboat station please go to https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/new-quayrnli.”
