PLANS for a new social housing development have been unveiled in Caernarfon as part of a bid to reduce the local waiting lists.
Adra, formerly known as Cartrefi Cymunedol Gwynedd, has submitted plans for 17 homes at the former Cae’r Glyn Allotments on Ffordd Bethel, Caernarfon.
With the site standing opposite Ysgol Syr Hugh Owen, its proposed to including a mixture of two, three and four bedroom homes, with most to be offered as social housing and meeting the “significant need” for such housing within Caernarfon.
“The site has been vacant since the allotment use ceased many years ago. It has since been used sparingly for sheep grazing to stop the site becoming too overgrown,” notes Adra’s supporting statement accompanying the planning application.
“Following positive discussions with the LPA and to satisfy the need for affordable housing within Caernarfon, the applicant has decided to progress with a 100% affordable housing scheme on site.”
Set to offer 40 parking spaces and 838sq m of public open space, Adra says that the scheme will offer “mixed affordable tenures of social and intermediate rent which will allow affordable access to housing for local residents.”
To qualify for the social rented homes, applicants will need to be registered with the Gwynedd Common Housing Register while the candidates for the intermediate rent properties will need to register their interest with Tai Teg.
The supporting statements went on to note, “Providing a mixture of 2, 3 and 4-bedroom properties will offer an opportunity for various families that are currently in unsuitable dwellings to gain a new home with a private garden situated within an amiable location.
“This would facilitate various families to establish a home in the area by improving the living conditions for all members.

“Following recent changes to the benefits system, several tenants have suffered due to the bedroom tax because of under occupancy and wish to move to a smaller home.
“Two- bedroom properties would assist Adra to better manage its current stock and enable those applicants who wish to move to a smaller home, thus releasing a larger property to other applicants.
“This would also help families on the housing register who require 3 or 4- bedroom homes.”
It’s expected that Gwynedd Council’s planning department will consider the application over the coming weeks.
