New zipwire and better access for disabled children at Coychurch play park

A play park has been transformed with a new zipwire and better access for disabled children in Coychurch, Bridgend.

Coychurch Lower Community Council (CLCC) received a grant of £55,000 from Welsh Government to revamp a play park next to Ruthin Court with new features including a wooden climbing frame and a roundabout with wheelchair access.

Mabyn Thomas, clerk of CLCC, said the changes are “part of an ongoing project” that aims to make the park “very accessible and usable so nobody will be excluded”.

Before the park was revamped

“The play park is in the middle of Coychurch and contained equipment that had not been updated for a number of years.”

She said the previous equipment at the park “sufficient” much younger children but the council hopes the new facilities will attract older ones as well as families from a wider vicinity.

She added the community council is “grateful” to Guy Smith, community asset transfer officer at Bridgend County Borough Council, who advised the council to apply for Welsh Government funding through its Play Sufficiency initiative.

“This grant has enabled us to have this work completed quicker than we had expected.”

The new equipment marks the first phase of the council’s plan to completely revamp the park. Phase two will consist of refurbishing the ball court with new flooring and fencing and the third phase will introduce special equipment for children with special needs and extra changes to the wildlife garden.

The new play equipment is already available to use but CLCC will officially re-open the park on Friday May 28 at 3.30pm. Helen Evans, vice chair of the council will be attending.
