Pembrey Country Park hosts exciting open-air theatre for families

CARMARTHENSHIRE County Council is setting the stage for an exciting open-air theatre event at Pembrey Country Park next week.

The council’s theatre service, Theatrau Sir Gâr, will host a one-off programme of outdoor theatre shows at the popular country park from August 21-25, showcasing a varied line-up of family entertainment including children’s plays, drama, contemporary dance and a family friendly comedy club.

A temporary outdoor stage will be created especially for the five-day ‘Theatrau Sir Gâr yn y Parc’ event with audiences being assigned their own areas for groups of up to six people.

Audiences are invited to bring their own outdoor chairs or blankets to sit on as part of this alfresco theatre experience.

Cllr Peter Hughes Griffiths, Executive Board Member for culture, sport and tourism, said: “We’re looking forward to bringing this new experience of open-air theatre to Pembrey Country Park. Equally, we’re delighted to be staging live theatre performances in the county once more after such a long period of closure through the pandemic, which we know our audiences have missed.
“This will be an opportunity for families to come together and enjoy live entertainment once again in the beautiful surroundings of one of Carmarthenshire’s most popular beauty spots.
“There is a varied line-up with something for everyone. Our theatres and country park teams look forward to welcoming families and performers.”

The opening event takes place on Saturday, August 21, with The Great Insect Games – a fun-filled 30 minutes of inventive children’s theatre – with two performances taking place during the afternoon.

Saturday night will see some of the funniest stand-ups on the UK comedy circuit taking to the stage for a one-off Family Friendly Comedy Club featuring an hour of family entertainment.

Sunday’s theme is dance with two free performances taking place during the afternoon featuring international duo Maggi Swallow and Tiago Gambogi presenting dance and music based on the ancient Welsh legend ‘Afanc’; and a contemporary dance performance by Osian Meilir, ‘Qwerin’, featuring an original sound-score by Bafta award-winning composers.

Theatr Genedlaethol Cymru makes a welcome return to Carmarthenshire with ‘Gwlad yr Asyn’, a Welsh language production brimming with humour, satire and song – performances take place at 7pm on Monday and Tuesday, August 23 and 24.

Closing the show on Wednesday is children’s theatre piece ‘The Lion Inside’, based on a best-selling children’s book telling a story about confidence and self-esteem.
