Pembrokeshire Coastal Park education programmes align well with 2022 Welsh curriculum

Education programmes within Pembrokeshire Coastal Park will align well with the new curriculum coming into force across Wales in 2022.

How the outdoor learning already undertaken by Pembrokeshire Coast National Park with schools and the links with the new curriculum were outlined for members of the authority’s operational review committee on June 17.

Discovery team leader Graham Peake highlighted that there is already a lot of work done with schools especially when it comes to outdoor learning but Coivd-19 had brought a halt to that for the time being.

The focus is on four separate areas he told members at the virtual meeting – Paid offer at park centres, which schools pay for themselves, paid offer at outreach locations across the National Park, community-based projects and more project focused events, with external funding.

The service is subsidised, said Mr Peake, with the cost in 2018/19 nearly £52,000 with £27,000 of income which covers a range of educational opportunities which 10,800 learners took advantage of from the foundation phase to Al level and college students.

It offers experiences and “wow learning moments that stick with children for a long time,” he added, which could then be built upon by teachers.

Outdoor schools coordinator Bryony Rees spoke about the “dynamic partnership” of a number of organisations with a wide range or expertise that provide “high quality outdoor learning linked to the curriculum.”

Authority member Dr Madeleine Havard said education was one of the purposes of the organisation and those involved should “take some plaudits for the mount lifelong learning that ones on in the park.”

The new Curriculum for Wales in development is already being piloted in some schools and takes a more “holistic approach to a student’s ‘learning journey’, placing a greater emphasis on ‘local curriculums’ and supporting schools to design their own curriculum and assessment arrangements,” a report to members states.
